Gökçeada Fisheries and Sponge-fishing Research Unit was established in 1972 under Istanbul University Faculty of Science Hydrobiology Department with the advise of National Security Council. Then its name was changed as Gökçeada Marine Research Center. The center was linked to our faculty in 1983. The center that is located in Kaleköy coast in north-west of Gökçeada Island, hosts an administrative building with two laboratories, 3 offices and a conference room; a guesthouse with a capacity of 12 people, 1 workplace and three personnell housing. In addition there are 11 meter tall wooden vessel named Fırtına IU and fiberglass boat that we are using in marine research studies.
Considering Aegean Sea has strategic importance for our country, sustainable use of living resources fisheries management, raising awareness among fishermen, protecting critical habitats and endangered species are among our main tasks. Also, determination of biodiversity, creating a museum, providing nursery for endangered species and molding public opinion to save seas are among our tasks.
Gökçeada island have high biodiversity and the island is on migration route of many marine species migrated among Black sea and Mediterranean Sea. Our goal is to form the basis for the protection of national interests was to perform research, at the international level, contributing to development, use resources efficiently and effectively the world of science is to be an elite institution.

SAPANCA INLAND FISHERIES PRODUCTION RESEARCH AND APPLICATION UNIT
Within the Inland Department of Hydrobiology Research Institute, established in 1950 by Ord. Prof. Dr. Curt KOSSWIG in Baltalimanı, studies on the development of inland fishery and aquaculture started in 1974 between Turkish and German governments were started. After the establishment of Sapanca Inland Fisheries Production Research & Application Unit in 1979, fisheries and limnology research studies as well as trout, carp and crayfish aquaculture researches continued in the region of Sapanca, Iznik and Ulubat Lakes.
Presently, we have Russian sturgeon which is a protected species and Blacksea trout in addition to rainbow trout in our facility. Genetic improvement and breeding biotechnology projects are undertaken for better production practices.
Local producers are informed about larval feeding, grow-out feeding and broodstock feeding practices with scientific feeding trials and feeding technology studies.
New, Innovative and environment friendly Production Technologies are tested and researched to support sustainable fish production like recirculation aquaculture systems and integrated aquaponics as a result of diminishing water resources.
Researches are conducted to determine the lake structure and productivity, economically important fish species and wiegth/length relationship and reproductive cycles of these fishes and data are collected. Also researches are conducted on the assesment and protection of on the water resources that are feding the lake and surrounding rivers.
Our facility for aquatic sciences education gives the opportunity of practice and implementation to our students. Personnel from public and private institutions are trained, national and international symposiums, workshops and seminars are performed in this facility.
Sapanca facility holds; Biotechnology laboratory, Fish diseases laboratory, Fish Feeding Laboratory and Biology laboratory. In addition, there is a library for periodic publications and books. There is a dormitory for internship students and a guest house for scientific researchers.

R/V Yunus S Research Vessel
R/V YUNUS-S was engineered at Tuzla PKM shipbuilding in 1994. She is the first research vessel that was built by Turkish engineering labour. The survey expeditions have made to Marmara Sea, Aegean Sea, Mediterranean Sea and international seas since 1995.
R/V Yunus-S Research vessel has been the provision of service for faculty researchers in marine biology, marine ecology, fishing, fishing technology researches and providing scientific and technical developments in the application of undergraduate and graduate courses such as fisheries biology and population dynamics, water quality, marine mammals, oceanography, fishing techniques, aquatic invertebrates, fishing vessels, equipment, fish systematics, knowledge of plankton, aquatic invertebrates, fishing gears, construction techniques, fish biology, fish anatomy, fish catching methods, phytoplankton ecology of applications.
The chemical and biological analyses are carried out in the vessel’s laboratories in situ. There is a computer laboratory and a hydrophone unit for bioaqustic research. Seabird rosette sampling system, trawl net, nets for plankton, portable CTD, Nansen bottles, microscopes and SCUBA diving equipment for 8 people are also present in the research vessel. Our vessel is suitable for a crew of 21 people; 12 researchers and 9 ship staffs.

Our journal started its publishing life within IU Fisheries Vocational High School in 1987 and continued publishing papers in Turkish and English as "Turkish journal of Aquatic Sciences (TJAS) between 2016-2017. Its name was changed as “AQUATIC SCIENCES and ENGINEERING" in 2018. Our journal publishes original articles, review articles, and short communications about all aspects of aquatic sciences in English.
