Dear colleagues,

1st National Gamete Biology Workshop on Aquaculture was held at Istanbul University Faculty of Fisheries Sapanca Production Research and Application Unit between 3-5 April 2014.

Professor Dr. Jacky Cosson from Czech Republic South Bohemian University of Faculty of Fisheries and Dr. Lambros Kokokiris from Water Protection and “Alexander Technological Institute, Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology” attended the workshop as invited speakers.

Representatives from Ataturk University, Mustafa Kemal University, Mugla Sıtkı Kocman University, Sinop University, Ege University, Ankara University, Karadeniz Technical University, Recep Tayyip Erdogan University, Kocaeli University, Inonu University, Istanbul University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Directorate General of Fisheries Research Institute, Fisheries Research Institute, Elazığ, Hatay Provincial Control Laboratory Directorate, Municipality of Sapanca, Karasu Civil Society Organization participated to the workshop.

Applied sturgeon and salmon sperm freezing processes were demonstrated to the participants during the workshop by Dr. Aygül Ekici and Dr. Güneş Yamaner.

At the end of the workshop, various topics among which the growing importance of gamete biology in fisheries sector and the transfer of developing techniques to the industry, that production would rise depending on gamete quality, that the gamete storing techniques of endangered species should get in practice in our country as soon as possible and acceleration of the establishment of a gene bank were agreed.

The full texts of the presentations to the workshop, if submitted until 15 June 2014, will be published after referee evaluation in the first issue of IU Journal of Fisheries in 2014. The workshop took great interest in terms of its topic and it was decided that the 2nd Workshop be taken two years later at Mugla University, Sıtkı Koçman Fisheries Faculty.
